Clanfield - We Can Do It !

Two stories emerged over the weekend and just in case you missed them here is a roundup.

Firstly, there was strong reaction on social media when a Morrison’s video van made a brief appearance in Clanfield on Saturday.

On that morning, a Morrison’s van with a large video screen fixed to the side of the vehicle was promoting the supermarket’s products, right outside our local shops in Drift Road. Both shopkeepers and several customers felt this was far too intrusive so politely asked the driver to move. He did so but only by a few parking bays. He did leave eventually and it was suggested that the ASDA carpark in Waterlooville would be a good spot to try?

Clanfield Online hosted a successful networking evening last week when over 50 people gathered in the centre of the village to meet and make new friends.  The website membership of 43 local businesses and 27 community organisations were represented by those who gathered to enjoy a drink and delicious food in the Kassia in Drift Road.

We were fortunate to have Ken Moon as our main speaker who recounted his many years as our County and District Councillor; explained his current role in Brexit negotiations as a leading member of the Federation of Small Businesses and spoke about his next project, the opening and management of the Community Centre in Green Lane Clanfield. Questions from the audience reflected the intense interest in the community centre and Ken informed us that the building would be opening in early 2017 with a variety of sports and facilities on offer and to Sports England standards.  Plans for a Community Centre website were in progress that would give more information and permit online booking.

  • Why Checking Your Timing Belt Could Save You Money

Hilltop Garage - a handy guide to happy motoring

When it comes to car servicing, Timing Belt or Cam Belt replacement is without doubt the most important serviceable component of your car’s engine. Not only does it carry out an incredibly important job controlling the camshafts in your engine and keeps it running smoothly, but if left unchanged and it breaks, it can cause serious damage to your engine and cost hundreds if not thousands of pounds to repair.

When comparing the cost of a Timing Belt change in comparison to repairing the damage that a slipped or a snapped Timing Belt can cause, the question of whether to change your belt really does answer itself.

It is important that you know the change interval of your Timing Belt as going over the manufacturers’ recommendation can lead to a slipped or snapped belt.  We recommend that you follow your car manufacturers change interval, but don’t forget the belt itself is made of perishable material, so if you have any doubts about the condition of the belt itself or when it was last changed get a professional to check it out.

If you want to make a real difference in your life and that of your local community, then volunteering is the path you should consider.  Young or young at heart, student, working or retired there are all sorts of opportunities of getting involved in your local community that not only provide much needed public benefit but are also very satisfying to undertake. You offer a small amount of time and in return you learn new skills, make new friends and make a difference!

It is the enjoyment factor that really makes volunteer groups tick; that and the motivation you get on a task day. Some volunteers may work independently; others will be in groups but invariably all will be welcomed by professional staff. For you are usually helping to reduce their workload or extend their ability to offer more - so you are generally much appreciated.

Last month the extraordinary medal winning success of Team GB at the Olympics thrilled the nation.  There were many of us suffering from lack of sleep in that exhausting fortnight as we tuned in at bedtime and beyond to cheer on our brave and determined athletes.  And from Wednesday 7 September we must (and will!) do it all over again to celebrate and applaud the Paralympians as they compete in Rio.

Team GB are an inspiration to us all, no matter our age, sex, physical ability or size of waistline.  When the athletes are interviewed they speak about how tough their training can be and the struggle to achieve their best at all times.  They are single-minded individuals who despite every difficulty or disability are determined to succeed whatever the challenge before them. When Mo Farah was asked why he was so successful on the track he answered Training. You just have to put in the training.” This should be an inspiration to us all.  We might not ever get anywhere near Olympic standard, but by making the effort to be fitter and healthier despite any difficulty, we will follow in Team GB’s footsteps.
