Core products/services: Archaeology digs/experiments and education, Iron Age, Roman and Celt workshops for schools, learn about the environment and ancient sustainable farming

Business Summary

Based in rural Hampshire, near the village of Chalton, Butser Ancient Farm is a working experimental archaeological site.  Specialising in ancient Britain over 2000 years ago, the site is also a working farm.  There are ancient breeds of animals (sheep, pigs and goats), ancient crop varieties (Emma, Spelt and Einkorn) and the buildings include a Roman Villa, Iron Age Village and Stone Age enclosure.

General visitors are welcome as are groups, schools and volunteers.  Visitors can expect a tranquil day out within a beautiful setting.  Enjoy a coffee on the veranda of the new visitor centre overlooking the Iron Age enclosure. Meander through time and discover different architectures starting with the stone age.

The education program is second to none with hundreds of schools making repeat visits year after year.  The new curriculum has been embraced with hands on activities for all ages and abilities.

Volunteers are made to feel welcome and valued here – many people return on a weekly basis. There is a chance for people to gain to grounding experience and has kick started many people’s careers into an interesting direction.

Special events throughout the year include Beltain – the burning of the wickerman, family archaeology days and unique adult workshops.  There really is something for everyone.  So next time, don’t just drive past – call in!
