Volunteer Ranger Service, South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA)

Summary

The Volunteer Ranger Service (VRS) are split into 4 area based teams; the ‘Western Downs’ team meet at Queen Elizabeth Country Park (QECP) but work on tasks throughout Hampshire.

Typically, work involves a wide variety of physical tasks, such as clearing footpaths, fencing, scrub bashing, etc but it also includes wildlife surveys, eg Lapwing surveys, water vole surveys or river fly monitoring, whichever task is in season. A few volunteers choose to undertake office or event administration.

Professional Rangers manage the VRS and coordinate tasks with relevant landowners. Tools, uniforms and training are all provided and we use SDNPA landrovers/4x4’s to go out on task.

Volunteers can choose which days to attend throughout the week. Separate teams go out on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Any volunteer can choose to attend monthly, weekly or more times a week.
