There will be lots to do, learn and see at Butser Ancient Farm this summer and autumn.

This nationally recognised working experimental archaeological site is located just a couple of miles from Clanfield. You can’t afford to miss the fantastic events and workshops they have on offer.

July Events and Workshops

Friday 24 July – Try It Family Archaeology Day at Butser Ancient Farm

All hands on deck!

Bring a picnic and spend the day having a go at many different activities all associated with experimental archaeology. Also see the new Saxon Longhouse build taking shape, which will extend the Butser timeline!
There will be activities taking place in all area of the farm – Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon.
Great to feed the kids imaginations and discover how things worked.

No need to book - normal entrance fees apply.

Would you survive in the wild?

Come to Butser Ancient Farm and learn bushcraft skills!

Saturday 1 August – Cave Painting

Join artist Madeleine Allison at Butser Ancient Farm to explore the ancient painting techniques used by cave dwellers. Use natural pigments to make your own unique cave painting panel to take home.

Saturday 12 August – Medicinal Herbs through Time

A look at medicinal plants and their uses through time.
How much has the use of local and garden plants changed when treating disease? In this class we will look at, taste, use, discuss and make herbal preparations as they did then and as we do now.

Saturday 16, 22 & 23 August – Ceramic Pit Firing

Create your own ceramic pot and learn how to use a pit fire to colour it. This will create a wonderful unique piece for you to take home.

During this workshop the ancient art of pit-firing ceramics will be explained in a historical and contemporary setting. You will create your own work in clay and return the following week to fire the work in an open air situation.

All tools and materials provided – no previous experience required.

September Events and Workshops

Saturday 12th September - Flint Knapping

Discover how our ancestors made tools out of the stones in the ground. Learn to understand flint as a material and how to knap and work it to make ancient tools. Discover the talents and skills of ancient Britons and go home with a flint tool you have made yourself.

Sunday 13 September - Archaeology Illustration

Ideal for anyone interested in archaeology, who would like to learn more about how to illustrate your findings. Perfect for students of archaeology to learn this important skill.

Saturday 26 September – Felt Making & Celtic Cookery Workshop

Create a fabulous felt wall hanging from scratch using natural materials, plus also learn to cook a simple Celtic lunch over the fire in the Great Roundhouse and then enjoy the feast.

The course is run by artist Madeleine Allison, a Hampshire artist who has run many successful workshops at Butser Ancient Farm.

Time: 10.00 - 2.30
Cost: £60.00 and you get to keep what you have created! Lunch included.

October Events and Workshops

Wednesday 28 October – Story Telling in the Great Roundhouse

Come and listen to the next epic tale from the company ‘Fayebles’. Join us around a roaring fire in the Great Roundhouse at 2pm. You can also have a go at the spirit hunt.

Cost: Normal farm entrance

Wednesday 28 October – Samhain evening in the Roundhouse

Join us in the Great Roundhouse for an evening of music and ancient tales with Jonathon Huet. There will be a licensed bar and refreshments available.

Time: 7.00 – 10.00

Friday 30 October – Fright Night at the Farm

Come and meet your ancestors! Are you brave enough to tour Butser Ancient Farm at night? Who will you meet along the way? Why not make an evening of it, book your preferred time slot followed by supper at one of the local pubs?

Time: Tours between 7.00 and 9.30 available
Cost: £10 per head

Saturday 31st October – Meditation in the Roundhouse

Join Madeleine Allison for an afternoon of meditation in the Great Roundhouse.
Some light refreshments included.

Time: 3.00 – 5.00
