Visit of the French to Clanfield
- Published: 9th July 2015
Visitors from Val d’Oison in Normandy visited Clanfield in June. The 34 members of the French Twinning group came to enjoy a weekend with old and new friends from Clanfield Twinning Association. We were celebrating 20 years of friendship.
They arrived late on the Friday night due to a cancellation of a ferry and were quickly dispersed to their beds around the village and surrounding parishes. On Saturday after a lazy breakfast everyone went on a variety of trips with their hosts such as Beaulieu, Petersfield, Chawton, and Arundel.
Saturday evening, everyone came together at the Memorial Hall in Clanfield for a welcome drink, a four course meal, a toast and cake to celebrate the anniversary. This was followed by dancing with music supplied by Phil Owen; chatting with old friends and catching up with news from both sides of the Channel; while new members found out some more things about their new friends and each others lives.
On Sunday everyone made their way down to the Dockyard, many by the Park and Ride bus – a novelty for the French going on a double-decker bus. Luckily, the rain had stopped so we could go on a boat trip round the harbour, then we had a meal at the “Boathouse NO.7” before making our way to the Mary Rose Museum. Everyone was very impressed with the museum, before making their way back to the homes of their hosts for another meal.
Unfortunately again due to a cancellation of a ferry they had to leave earlier than planned on the Monday morning, but friendships old and new had been rekindled and everyone is looking forward to the return visit next year to France.
