The Mirchi Restaurant – tasting the difference

My husband and I went along to the Mirchi Indian Restaurant in South Lane Clanfield last week. We had heard positive comments from friends and wanted to give it a try.
First impressions as we walked in? It is a small restaurant which uses its limited space in a creative way. There is a choice of tables and cosy booths to choose from so it doesn’t feel crowded.
We received a warm reception from the staff who welcomed us with smiles. Chatting to them later we found they all lived locally and they wanted us to feel at home in the restaurant.
Whilst nibbling on crisp papadams and an excellent chutney tray we studied the menu. This was when we realised our meal was going to be something special. You could tell that the menu wasn’t just a list of choices but had been written with pride and care about the food that was being offered.
The owner of the Mirchi came out of the kitchen to welcome us. Shubho is passionate about his cooking and he shared the secret behind the dishes he produces. He believes that the true flavour of Indian cooking comes from freshly ground spices combined with the best ingredients. Each dish is cooked to order and if it takes a few minutes longer to produce you know you are going to have a great meal.
We chose two different starters – onion bhaji and king prawn butterfly. Both dishes were light, yet succulent and they were served with individual salads that cleansed the palate before the main course. The menu promised that the starters would ‘tantalise the tastebuds’ and it delivered on that promise.
For the main course we opted for the Mirchi Special Range ordering Butter Chicken and Zeera Bhuna. With advice from the staff we ordered plain rice and a simple naan bread so we could fully appreciate the variety and depth of the freshly ground spices. I want to use the word ’delicious’ several times at this point – it was a very special meal.
Now we have found the Mirchi Restaurant and Takeaway - next time we will be going with friends!
