Volunteers from Clanfield Online, South Downs National Park and Greening Clanfield completed the Drift Road Roundabout Flowerbed Project on Thursday 29 October. Taking advantage of a break in the weather they planted a variety of shrubs, grasses and spring bulbs in a prepared flowerbed constructed the previous week on land owned by The Southern Co-operative.
Brigitte Crafer, a local Landscape Designer, Russell Cleaver representing the SDNP Volunteers and Bill Enstone of Greening Clanfield set to work in wet and muddy conditions to ensure that colour and fragrance will enhance one area of this important crossroads in 2016. They were supported by Chris de Mellow, chairman of Clanfield Online and Jon Barker, manager of the Clanfield Co-op Store who were able to give them a few pointers for successful planting!
The idea for a community flowerbed came from Chris de Mellow. “Clanfieldonline.com is keen to help make this village a more attractive and colourful place to live and work” he commented yesterday. “Working with local volunteer groups and using funds supplied by local businesses ensures that the whole community benefits.”
He is not alone in this desire judging by the number of positive comments from passers-by who wanted to know more about the project, the choice of insect friendly plants and offers to help maintain the flowerbed.
