Cockleshell Challenge 2016

11 September 2016

We are a team of Firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. On 11 September this year we are retracing the paddle splash marks of the famous Second World War mission ‘Operation Frankton' and the Cockleshell Heroes.

This challenge will raise money for three great and deserving charities:

  • The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund: www.rmctf.org.uk
  • Fighters Charity: www.firefighterscharity.org.uk
  • Royal National Lifeboat Institution: www.rnli.org

Like the Cockleshell Heroes we will set out on Royal Marine two man Kleppers, paddling 90 miles in 5 days up the treacherous waters of the Gironde Estuary, in France. Our journey will end in the port of Bordeaux where the original mission achieved its objective, placing explosives on German shipping blockade.

We will follow the same route that the Cockleshell Heroes took when they set off on 7th December 1942, stopping at the same points along the route, hoping to bring history alive.

Out of respect and admiration to these very brave British servicemen of the past we are determined to raise as much money for the servicemen of today! All the team have been training really hard in all weathers in preparation for the challenge. We have held several successful charity events in the lead up to our departure including: car washes, bag packs and charity nights on local Fire stations.

You can find out lots more about our challenge on the following links, there will be regular updates on our progress for those that wish to follow and also information on how to support or donate:

In October the team along with other guests will be attending the unveiling of a heritage plaque on the home of Blondie Hasler who lived in Catherington.
