Blitz on Litter
Volunteer litter pickers from Clanfield, Catherington and Horndean gathered on Sunday morning to help improve our area.
Led by a local Councillor, the group worked in teams to clear the ‘hot-spots’ alongside road verges, outside shops and near local schools. As one of the group remarked “why is it that schools attract so much litter? Is it the waiting parents or the children who are the litter-bugs?”
The volunteers also noted how often litter, such as cans and food packaging, could be found beside parking bays. It was obvious that the rubbish had been dropped out of cars and then flattened by other vehicles. Discarded till receipts were another problem; they litter the floor immediately outside shops whilst litter bins were only a few metres away.
Over 30 bags of litter were collected after just 2 hours of tidying up; one of the more unusual items recovered from a hedgerow was a metal mannequin - who was immediately recruited as a new volunteer!
This ‘South of Butser’ team will be back again in early November to undertake the next litter clearance campaign, so any new volunteers would be very welcome.
