Butser Ancient Farm – The Book of Ancestors

Tickets can be bought online at

On Friday 9th November at 7pm, Butser Ancient Farm will host ‘The Book of Ancestors’; a one-off evening of storytelling for grown-ups. The storytelling tradition is long in our shared heritage, likely around for as long as human language itself. On dark evenings communities would gather around fires to share their experiences, fears, beliefs and adventures, strengthening bonds through stories that connected the present, the past and the future.

Professional storyteller, Jason Buck, will weave a spellbinding tale around the hearth of the Great Roundhouse at Butser Ancient Farm, welcoming visitors to warm themselves by the fire and be transported back thousands of years to the communities of old.

Inspired by testing on Jason’s ancestral DNA, the story starts with Jacobus, a young Greek boy, growing up in Roman Italy, and follows his descendants as they migrate across borders, nations and centuries, to the present day. Each story is an original piece, using mythologies of the times and regions, across the nations and across the ages.

“Jack … I will give you and your descendants good lives … but you must return to me in two thousand years and bring me the stories in your blood”.

The event starts at 7pm, tickets are priced at £15 and can be booked online through the Butser Ancient Farm website.

This storytelling evening is one of a number of wintertime events taking place at Butser Ancient Farm during this darker half of the year. Illuminated by fire, lantern and candlelight the atmospheric ancient buildings take on a unique character not to be missed. For more details of upcoming events and booking visit
