Community Speedwatch needs you!

What is it?

    • Speeding has been one of the biggest community concerns in rural areas and villages and is one of the most complained about topics in village society.
    • In this village, about 6 years ago, a group of residents who wanted to do something about the problem were recruited by Hampshire Police to form a very successful Community Speedwatch team.
    • Parish Councils from the South of Butser area contributed to the cost of the equipment and jackets and local Police provided the necessary training and standards, procedures under which we operate.

Objectives & Results

    • In the years we've been operating, a marked reduction in speed has been observed - particularly in the known previous "hotspots" across our parish.
    • Whilst the prime objective is driver speed awareness and "education", persistent offenders will get a visit from police after an initial letter.
    • Hampshire Police use our results to target known locations, conducting occasional "enforcement" sessions with the aid of a ‘speed gun’; motorists who are exceeding the speeding limit, do not have road tax or insurance will receive fixed penalties notices.

Come and join us!

    • We are a small, happy band of volunteers who believe we are really making an important difference in this village – taking acting rather than just complaining about a problem.
    • We are a great mix of ages, retirees and those still working, male and female: we just need volunteers who can spare a few hours a month to support their community
    • All equipment and training provided; including necessary hot drinks & biccies on cold mornings!
    • Police vetting is required for all applicants, but local travelling expense can be claimed; public liability insurance is covered by Hampshire Constabulary.
