Summer of Science and Sorcery

This summer Butser Ancient Farm celebrates a Summer of Science and Sorcery: an exploration of ancient technology, crafts and skills, all within the beautiful and atmospheric surroundings of the farm’s Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon buildings. Hands on activities will bring to life how ancient innovations and prehistoric knowledge shaped our world; from flint knapping and fire lighting to metalworking and mead-making!

How did our ancestors make and use fire, turn rocks into glinting metal or heal wounds using the power of plants?  Find the answers to these questions and more on Butser Ancient Farm’s themed activity days, each Tuesday throughout the Summer holidays.

Butser Festival of Archaeology - Tuesday 24 July

Awesome Earth – Tuesday 31 July

Fearsome Fire – Tuesday 7 August

Wonderful Water – Tuesday 14 August

Powerful Plants – Tuesday 21 August

The finale to the summer takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 27 August celebrating all things Bees, Bread and Beer.

There’s also lots more to see over the summer at Butser Ancient Farm as the new Saxon Build gets underway, the Little Woodbury Roundhouse is rethatched, and the colourful Roman Villa renovation continues. Plus, the popular Warrior Camp summer holiday club returns from Monday 23 July; with the chance for young people to learn ancient survival skills and see if they have what it takes to be an ancient warrior!

More details of all activities can be found on the Butser Ancient Farm website; or by calling 02392 598838.
