Pre-school gives three cheers for SSEN volunteers

Clanfield Community Pre-school staff and children have been overwhelmed by the generosity of volunteers from SSEN (Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks) who stepped in and kindly donated their time and energy to install the pre-school's eagerly anticipated vegetable garden.

The pre-school has been raising funds for the vegetable garden for the last year and when a plea went out via Facebook for help installing the fences and raised beds, SSEN were quick to respond, donating two days of their energy and expertise.

Chair of the committee, Kirstie Pearson comments "We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the staff at SSEN. With just two weeks to go until the Preschool reopened after the summer holidays they have really saved the day for us! We can’t wait to see all the children enjoying the new outside space and learning to grow their own produce. Hopefully we will inspire a new generation of gardeners!"

Outside space is very important to the pre-school, and the children who attend are encouraged to go outside as much as possible, in all weathers, as it is their belief that moving, exploring, running and activity are what children need to thrive.

The new vegetable garden will give the children the chance to be hands on with growing their own produce, some of which will be used in pre-school activities.  It will help to teach children about healthy eating and where their food comes from, and opens up more opportunities for outside learning.

This fantastic new space coincides with the introduction of Forest School sessions for the pre-school children after two members of staff undertook Forest School Leader Training last term which aims to enhance the children's outside learning and experience, enabling them to make the most of all the outside space.
