Crowds throng Community Centre opening

Hundreds of villagers came along to the Clanfield Sports and Community Centre Open Evening on Wednesday. This was the first opportunity to get inside the building, look at the interior layout and discover what is happening in the next few months.  Several trustees of the foundation were there to chat to the steady stream of residents that arrived throughout the evening.

There was general agreement that the size, scale and layout of the main sports hall was impressive.  As outdoor shoes are not permitted in the hall, we stayed just inside the entrance as a trustee told us about the variety of sports that will be offered; 5 a-side football, netball, volleyball and badminton will be available - the courts are already marked out in different, vibrant colours. They are hoping to have a curtain installed to separate this large space for different groups and there are lockers, showers and toilets just a few metres away.

Two separate studio/meeting rooms, a café and reception area will need some fitting out before users can fully access the building.  At present these are covered in carpet tiles, but plans are in place to upgrade the flooring to make it suitable for dance, meeting and café use. I met an enthusiastic Yoga tutor who was assessing the available space in one of the studios and she spoke of her plans to offer sessions to beginners, hoping to show the benefits of yoga to a new audience. This room will be fitted with floor to ceiling mirrors to assist learners improve their techniques in dance, pilates and of course yoga.

Once the website is live, information about facilities and classes will be advertised plus a phone app to enable clients to check availability and book classes.

There is much to arrange over the next few weeks; staff to recruit and train, fitting out of the building, equipment installation, fencing to be removed and a website to launch. The trustees are planning to open for business in September and they hope that local people will support this new and exciting facility in the centre of our village.
