Mosaic Magic
Have you ever wondered how the Romans designed and made their mosaic floors? How long it took, and the materials and techniques used? The team at Butser Ancient Farm have been investigating these very questions over the past year as they have installed a beautiful mosaic floor in the central room of the Butser Roman Villa.
Now is your chance to get involved and find out more! Over the Easter Holidays, the final part of the mosaic floor will be installed and the Butser team are inviting visitors to get hands-on and lay some of the final tesserae to complete the design.
Join the mosaic laying team to take part in this unique project:
To celebrate all things mosaic, the Butser team have also launched an online resource with information about how mosaics were made in Roman Britain. Whilst aimed principally at school children and teachers, this website will give a great insight into mosaic making for anyone curious about this ancient skill.
