Clanfield Cricket Club Mid-Season Report

The summer of 2019 is living up to its expectations as one of the best for English cricket in living memory. With the World Cup victory in July to the Ashes coming up in August, cricket has certainly been ignited once again across the country as our national sport. With all this going on, Clanfield Cricket Club have been playing friendly fixtures across Hampshire and are now past the halfway mark in the season.

Season highlights: Clanfield have played 20 fixtures in total; winning 9, losing 10 with 1 draw and 5 lost to the weather. Some highlights from those 9 wins includes a superb fightback away vs Boxgrove where Bob Wheeler and Matt Bradley scored 83 runs in the last 13 overs to chase down 226 with 2 balls remaining. Another exciting game saw Clanfield win away at Liss by 10 runs. In a game that ebbed & flowed, Liss looked set for victory but a Clanfield fightback saw us claim victory by 10 runs.

Batting statistics: Matt Bradley leads the way with 564 runs so far this season. Matt has scored 3 half centuries this season including a personal best of 89 away at Liss. Chris Wheeler has also been in the runs with 338 and has also scored 3 half centuries. Other notable performances include Roy Goulding who scored his maiden Clanfield 50 away at Newport Inn; Bob Wheeler who made a personal best 49 away at Boxgrove and Will Andrews who scored his maiden century at home to Boxgrove – which incidentally was the first century by a Clanfield player at South Lane Meadow.

Bowling statistics: Andy Wellen leads the way with 18 wickets, but he is being chased down by Chris Buckle and Bob Wheeler who are both on 17 wickets.  Notable performances include Chris Buckle taking 4/35 vs Howzat CC, Mike Collins taking 4/26 away at Liss and Andy Wellen with 3/11 and 3/12 in consecutive matches. A hotly contested battle looks in store for the top wicket-taker of 2019.

Join us: All in all, a good season with a great atmosphere amongst the club with 11 matches left of the 2019 season. We are delighted to report that we have welcomed a host of new players who have integrated well but we are always on the lookout for new recruits, so if you have been inspired by England’s heroics to take up or make a return to cricket, please get in touch.
