Half-term days out ideas

The half-term term holiday is almost here, and the weather forecast is looking good – dry, sunny and not too cold. So, time to plan days out that the whole family can enjoy.

Butser Ancient Farm is a stunning local attraction and they have fascinating activities planned for next week. Step back in time and view life in the South Downs when our ancestors lived in these hills from the Stone Age through to the Anglo Saxons.  Butser Ancient Farm at Half-term

Queen Elizabeth Country Park and Butser Hill are right on our doorstep so this must be on the list to visit.  A favourite spot for many families is the Assault Couse and Adventure Play trails at the top of the hill at QECP. Butser Hill is the highest point of the South Downs and on a clear day you can see for miles – grab the binoculars and enjoy the view. QECP

How about just a quiet countryside?

Old Winchester Hill is about 6 miles from the centre of Clanfield and a glorious spot at any time of year.  We wrote about this ancient hillfort in a blog last summer. Old Winchester Hill walk  You won’t see many flowers at this time of year, but it is a very special place to visit.  Look out for the Herdwick Sheep, they look like they can hold their own whatever the weather!

 Leaving the car at home?

You could just walk up Little Hyden Lane beside Clanfield Junior School and follow the footpath into the ‘Bluebell Woods’ and head up to the South Downs Way: South Downs Way  Look out for primroses, wood anemone and violets in the woods at this time of year – too early for bluebells but in a couple of months these woods will become a riot of colour. The woods are privately owned so please keep to the footpath.

Whatever you have planned this half-term make some time to enjoy the beautiful South Downs countryside – and don’t forget to take you littler home with you!
