Litter pickers join Great British Spring Clean

Last Sunday was a beautiful day to be out enjoying the spring sunshine.  There was a bit of a nip in the air but the sound of birdsong, banks of wild flowers and vivid blue sky made it a perfect day for a walk.  However, there was work to be done by the Clanfield and Horndean Litter Pickers taking part in the #GBspringclean2019 before they could really enjoy such a perfect day.

Sixteen local volunteers pulled on their old clothes and hi-vis jackets to collect litter from paths, roads and hedgerows in Clanfield and Horndean. At the end of two hours of they had collected 42 black bin bags plus an assortment of discarded tyres, batteries, metal, plastic and rubble.

The group found cans and bottles nestled amongst primroses and violets; broken bathroom tiles dumped in a hedgerow and fast food packaging thrown on the side of the road.  Discarded newspaper carpeting the road verge close to the Bat & Ball pub was a challenge – volunteers couldn’t retrieve every sheet as they had blown into the fields, but they did their best.  It does make you wonder about the people who throw litter – are they totally unaware of the impact it has on our countryside and the place we call home?

The Litter Pickers have asked us to publicise a petition launched by the Campaign to Protect Rural England CPRE lobbying government to support a deposit return system that collects every bottle, can and carton.  Please help if you can!

The group meet every month and the next litter pick is Sunday 28 April meeting at the far end of Morrisons carpark at 09.30.  Please take your rubbish home or put it in a public bin and then perhaps, one day, the group will be able to hang up their pickers and bags and just go for a walk in the spring sunshine like everyone else.
