EHDC Ready for a safe return to the high street

News release EHDC

Ready for a safe return to the high street

On Monday (15 June) many high street shops selling non-essential items will reopen their doors for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown began and East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) is ready to help shoppers and businesses.

The council has enlisted friendly high street helpers to visit high streets around the district to offer help and advice to shoppers and keep an eye out for any safety risks.

Signage is being put up around the district to remind shoppers of three key points:

  • Please wear a face covering in enclosed spaces or where social distancing isn’t possible.
  • Always keep a minimum of two metres (six feet) apart and avoid blocking the path.
  • Wash hands before and after shopping – and consider carrying hand sanitiser.

The council’s Food & Safety team has also been offering help to local businesses to ensure that the risk of infection to shoppers is minimised.

Councillor Robert Mocatta, EHDC portfolio holder for Community Development, Placemaking and Infrastructure said:

“We’re doing everything we can to ensure that we keep residents and shop workers safe during this first tentative step towards lifting lockdown.

“The shopping experience is likely to feel very different, as anyone who has been to the supermarket recently will know.

“Planning ahead will be key. If you are heading to the shops, it would be sensible to have hand sanitiser, a face covering, a contactless payment card or phone and the RingGo app on your phone so you can pay for parking without having to touch the machines.

“I encourage shoppers to allow plenty of time and be patient with shop staff and fellow shoppers. It will also be important to stay aware of traffic when following social distancing rules.”
