Windmill footpath dispute update
Author: Anne Cleaver
The footpath at the top of Windmill Hill, overlooking Clanfield, Chalton and Blendworth, remains blocked by a locked gate. As reported on 5th November, Windmill path blocked this dispute has resurfaced following several weeks of peaceful access for walkers.
Local walkers visited the top of Windmill Hill today (Monday) to find the new gate padlocked shut and a new, ‘No Access’, sign attached. There had also been reports of an additional wooden barrier nailed to the gate post beside the hedge, blocking a very narrow access way. However, this wooden block had been removed when the gate was inspected. The remaining gap is very narrow but passable, with care, by walkers.
This route remains a designated public footpath and walkers have every right to use it to enjoy the countryside. Please be aware that cattle are grazing in the adjacent fields and appear to be using the path from the road up to the top of the hill – please take care as you walk.
The path obstruction remains an ongoing dispute that is being dealt with by HCC Countryside Service. If you have concerns about any Hampshire Right of Way please report it here. https://www.hants.gov.uk/landplanningandenvironment/rightsofway/reportaproblem
