Young footballers around Horndean will be able to emulate the achievements of their England heroes with a new state-of-the-art all-weather pitch at Horndean Technology College.
The full-size 11-a-side 3G pitch is currently under construction at the college in Barton Cross and has been delivered in partnership with East Hampshire District Council.
Replacing and improving on the college’s current facilities, the pitch has been funded through £500,000 from the Football Foundation and £106,000 of developers’ contributions.
EHDC put £25,000 towards the scheme and supported the project through officer expertise, administration and securing the vital funding from partner organisations.
The new floodlit pitch will be the only one of its kind in the area and will be a great asset to both the college and the community.
Cllr Julie Butler, EHDC’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Welfare and Community Integration, said: “Our research into sport and playing fields in the southern parishes of East Hampshire showed that two new artificial pitches were required here if we were to match the demand.
“Once complete this brilliant pitch can be used by the college and by the local community clubs for training and matches.
“Who knows, maybe the next generation of England stars will hone their skills here!”
Healthy lifestyles are a key pillar of life at Horndean Technology College and football is offered to all year groups and as part of GCSE PE and BTEC Sport.
Headteacher Julie Summerfield said: “This is a project that will benefit the college and the wider community.
“Each day the students are excited by its development and eagerly observe the work that is taking place.
“Next year students and the wider community will be able to access a facility for learning and recreation which will be world class in its design and will significantly contribute to the continual development of sport within the area.
“I would like to thank EHDC for their support with this project and also our main funding partners, The Premier League, The FA and Government via the Football Foundation.”
