Clanfield Cricket July 2021 Report – records tumble between the showers

All of the Saturday, Sunday and Midweek sides from Clanfield Cricket Club continued their seasons into July as all sides managed to play games between sharp showers and continuing wet weather.

The Saturday league side won 2 out of their 3 games played in July with 2 games cancelled due to the weather. July started with a heavy defeat against table topping Kerala 3rd XI but bounced back with wins against Fair Oak 4th XI & Waterlooville 3rd XI. Alex Andrews stole the show against Fair Oak with a club record score of 184 from just 122 balls with 22 fours and 8 sixes! This was Alex’s first ever century and the first in a league game for the club. Andrews also made 70 in the victory against Waterlooville, but it was Nick Sawyer who stole the show by taking 5 wickets for 8 runs, his first 5 wicket haul for the club and the first by a Clanfield bowler in league cricket. Clanfield currently sit 4th in the league table, with the top 3 teams securing promotion. The league season finishes in August with 4 games, 2 away games against Hayling Island 2nd XI & Gosport 4th XI with home games against Sarisbury Athletic 5th XI & Portsmouth 4th XI.

The Sunday side went unbeaten in July as they won the 2 games played against Ashling & Knowle Village with fixtures against Droxford & Elsted cancelled due to the weather. Bob Wheeler and Chris Buckle took 3 wickets each against Ashling & Knowle Village respectively, whilst a century partnership between Matt Bradley and Adam Smith against Knowle Village was the batting highlight as both made half centuries. Adam Smith also played an unbeaten knock against Ashling to see the team home. The Sunday season continues into August with 3 home games to start the month against Swanmore, Petersfield & Hawkley with away fixtures against Lavant & Elsted to finish the month.

The Midweek team suffered 2 defeats in July to end their unbeaten run but did emerge victorious against Milcomms and were involved in a thrilling tie against Raymarine. Matt Bradley, Steve Perkins and Pete Middleton all made retiring scores of 25 throughout the games in July. James MacGregor was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 wickets vs Lou Smith Casuals and bowling economically in the other matches. Bob Wheeler, Chris Buckle and Roy Goulding also took regular wickets throughout the matches. The midweek season comes to an end with 2 games in August: one at home to Lou Smith Casuals, with the final match being away to DSTL Portsdown West.
