Hilltop Garage tips for Safer driving – check your tyres

Safer driving – check your tyres

“Look after your tyres and they will look after you” is the message from Hilltop Garage.  Drivers tend to forget how important well-maintained tyres are, providing contact with the road surface and keeping your car on the road whilst steering and braking.

A few basic weekly checks are all that is required to ensure that they are up to the job of keeping you safe on the road especially at this time of year.

Check the air pressure in the tyres; often there is a sticker or plate on one of the door frames with the correct inflation pressures.

Check the condition of the tread - is it deeper than 1.6 mm? Is the tyre wearing evenly across the whole of the tread?

Examine the tyres for visible cuts or tears in the tread or the sidewalls?

Inspect the wheel rims for damage and check that the wheels nuts are tight.

Notice if the steering wheel does a ‘shake or shimmy’ as you drive. Does the car pull to one side?

If you discover any of the faults above, then you need to take remedial action - get the vehicle checked to make sure that there isn’t something that needs attention.

If you look after your tyres and keep them in good condition they will last longer and keep you safe.

Here at Hilltop Garage Services, we will gladly advise you on the best course of action should you be concerned about your tyres. Please feel free to give us a call on 02392 596038 or pop in and have a chat with one of our friendly staff.
