Snowdrops at Catherington Church

There are some benefits to this cold snap – the low temperatures have transformed very muddy footpaths into rock-solid surfaces.  As long as you can avoid the icy patches, now is the time to get out into the hills around the village.

On a walk today from the centre of Clanfield, to enjoy the views from Catherington Down, I came upon a carpet of snowdrops in the ancient churchyard of All Saints Church, Catherington. What a wonderful sight on a really cold day – spring is just around the corner!

We may not be able to book a holiday, but we are surrounded by the South Downs National Park and some beautiful countryside, so pull on your walking boots, wrap up warm and get out of a walk!

Catherington Down Walk

You can walk up to Catherington Down to roam around the downland there and enjoy the fine views to the south-west.

This is a local nature reserve that is full of chalk grassland wildflowers, in the spring and summer months, and well worth a visit.

To reach there, either walk up White Dirt Lane or use Old Lane footpath from the Southdown Road to reach Catherington Church. Access to Catherington Down lies just across the road. It is approx.. 3.5 mile circular walk from the Drift Road shops.
