Final farewell to Charlie

Hundreds of people lined Drift Road in Clanfield this morning to say a final farewell to Charlie Cumbers. The crowds waited in the bright sunshine as the funeral cortege approached, which was then accompanied by a storm of applause for this much loved local man and his family.

South Downs Funeral Service Director, Paul Lee-Bapty, who was walking in front of the funeral cortege halted the procession in front of ‘Charlie’s’ shop as a mark of respect.  Charlie’s daughters, Holly and Fern, walked behind the hearse which was filled with flowers from the family.

The crowds who lined the route were exchanging stories of how kind Charlie had been during the 30+ years he had been in business in Clanfield. One couple didn’t know his surname – he was just ‘Charlie’ to them - many others said the same. His advice on DIY projects or generous offers of “take this home and try it out first and if it doesn’t work then bring it back to me” were echoed by many there.

Many were commenting on how lucky we are to live in this area, where community support is strong and local business owners are a vital part of our community.

Farewell Charlie – we will miss you!
