Plum job for Clanfield Cricket and Gardening Clubs

Two local clubs, Clanfield Cricket and Clanfield Gardening, teamed up last weekend to plant fruit trees and install bat and bird boxes in South Lane Meadow. The new orchard is just the first instalment of 3 phases of planting, organised by Clanfield Gardening Club, that will provide a perfect backdrop to Clanfield Cricket Club’s home games.

More than 20 willing helpers, from both clubs, removed dead trees and dug into the hard chalk soil to plant 8 fruit trees – apple, greengage, damson, plum and cherry. The trees, which were sourced locally, are protected with wooden stakes and animal guards. Phase 2 of the planting will include nut trees and Phase 3 will be heritage fruit trees. Clanfield Gardening Club took over the responsibility of the South Lane Orchard some four years ago and will be responsible for ongoing maintenance.

The hard work didn’t end there with 10 bird and 10 bat boxes installed in adjacent mature trees by Clanfield Cricket Club members, who were keen to do their bit to encourage wildlife in the meadow. Cricket club members also put on a BBQ and refreshments for the workers, who had worked up quite an appetite after all that digging.

Clanfield Gardening Club and Clanfield Cricket Club have shown us how much can be achieved by working together on a community project. Clanfield Online applauds their initiative and hard work to make our village a beautiful place to live.

Both clubs are keen to welcome new members who will learn new skills and make new friends – contact them today. Clanfield Cricket Club  Clanfield Gardening Club
