Treasure trove gifts at Butser Ancient Farm

Butser Ancient Farm shop is the place to visit if you are searching for an unusual gift.

I have a full calendar of family birthdays this autumn and wanted to stock up on presents that are a little out of the ordinary, don’t cost a fortune and if possible, locally produced.  Something of a challenge then? Well it was, until I remembered seeing photographs recently on Facebook showing some of the gifts on offer in the BAF shop. BAF Shop

I contacted Rachel at Butser Ancient Farm and here are a few ideas for local gifts that fit the bill.

  • Treat yourself to a glass of mead, an ancient tipple with a modern flavour. Local company Chalice Mead is always a winner; with over 15 different flavours including chocolate, elderflower, nettle and chilli – that should get the taste buds singing!
  • Hampshire honey from Froxfield plus local lavender and honey scented soaps.
  • Butser Ancient Farm, Summer Solstice and Celtic Garden are three scented candles produced, specifically for the farm, by the Sunny Honey Candle Company.  Honey-coloured salt crystal tealight holders also look attractive?
  • Handspun wool skeins are spun and dyed by the local guild, the East Hampshire Spinners, who enjoy practising the art of spinning, weaving and dying.
  • Very popular, if not exactly local, are the ‘pocket-money’ souvenirs for families: badges, cuddly toys, colouring sheets, bead bracelets and necklaces, mood rings, swords, axes and replica Roman coins.
  • Look at the books for sale: best-sellers include prehistoric cooking, foraging skills and flint daggers! The colourful children’s books give a brilliant introduction to ancient life for young minds – bringing the past to life.

Rachel told me that all profits from the shop go directly back into supporting the research and education work of the farm.  Super gifts, bought locally, that support local businesses – what could be better?
