Local charity helping children in Tanzania

My name is James and I was born and raised in Clanfield and have lived in the village for 23 years.  About 3 years ago I learnt about a local, UK registered charity, called Hope and Soul https://hopeandsoul.org.uk/ which is based in Tanzania and run by a local nurse, Hope Prosser.

Hope started work on the charity in 2013 and she supports vulnerable families, street boys and a local orphanage. Last February she moved out to Tanzania so that she could focus on the charity and ensure it ran smoothly. I have just returned from my second trip to Africa where, for the past three months, I have been working within the community with the charity.

Street Boys

This charity supports about twenty street boys who have all been provided with rooms and are supported with food after surviving for years living on the street.

Whilst out there I supported them by teaching them English, sports and providing information to support them with their general health.  I also got to help set up some of the boys into new rooms and see some of their business plans which the charity will help to start up and get running.

The orphanage

This orphanage has 14 children living in it with an age range between 6 and 17 years of age. Hope and Soul currently has sponsors for each child that is being cared for providing for their clothes, food and personal needs.

While I was there, I played games such as football, musical chairs and a lot of dancing - which I was not very good at!

We also celebrated their birthdays, buying them a cake and birthday presents. These children are supported but still have so little, nonetheless they are the happiest children I have ever met.

The families

These are three of the single parent families that Hope and Soul became aware of and are now supporting.

While I was there, I helped to look after the children by taking them for days out and making sure all their needs were met. I helped support the families with their medical care and making sure that they had food and everything they needed. I also supported one of the mothers with her schooling getting her the equipment she needed.

Return to the UK

This trip made me realise that I should not take what I have for granted and that many people in the world have so little, and are thankful for so little, and are always joyful.
