Wildflowers to bloom on Hampshire’s verges

Hampshire County Council are adjusting their work schedules in favour of wildflowers this year. Working with conservation charity Plantlife, HCC aim to reduce the amount of roadside mowing in the summer months, allowing the plants to flower and set seed for next year. Critical areas close to junctions will still be cut to ensure safe visibility for road users. https://www.hants.gov.uk/News/18052020vergecutting

Clanfield Online regularly receive comments that verges are being cut at the height of the wildflower season. If this initiative is successful it should boost the number of wildflowers and the wildlife that depends upon them - whilst saving money for other work.

Louise Grimwood of local group ‘Grow It’ commented, “I am delighted that Hampshire County Council is supporting the huge wildlife benefits by reducing the mowing of verges.  Lockdown has created an unexpected benefits with grass verges literally buzzing with wildlife.“ https://www.facebook.com/GrowitLouise

And it’s not just roadside verges - Clanfield Gardening Club are keen that villagers take part in the #NoMowMay campaign. CGC are encouraging us to leave the lawnmower in the shed or leave at least one patch of the garden to grow: “We need to help our pollinating insects, so these little tiny creatures can thrive.” For more great gardening tips visit their Facebook page: http://ow.ly/qHZm30qI5D6

Please help make our gardens and road verges flourish with colour and life in 2020.
