Family day out at Butser Ancient Farm

Butser Ancient Farm, just over the A3 from Clanfield, is a wonderful day out for all the family. Travel back in time through over 10,000 years of human history and discover what ancient life would have been like in this area with their reconstructed buildings and homes dating from Prehistory up to the Roman and Anglo Saxon periods.  You can also meet friendly rare-breed animals including English Goats and Manx Loaghtan Sheep.

The world famous experimental archaeology site will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year and is constantly expanding and developing based on the latest archaeological evidence. This summer they are building a Bronze Age roundhouse based on excavations from Salisbury Plain, working in partnership with a charity involving ex-service personnel and military veterans using archaeology for rehabilitation. This is a great opportunity to see traditional building techniques in action including timber framing and thatching.

The farm hosts a range of ancient skills workshops and special events as well as re-enactments throughout the year. On their open days at weekends and school holidays there is always the opportunity to get hands on with history and try your hand at an ancient skill such as spinning or chalk carving as you relax in the beautiful South Downs Landscape.

This September they will be hosting a brand new spectacular event – the Equinox Boat Burn with the Saxons and Vikings on Saturday 18th September, featuring battles, storytelling, Viking music, drumming and a dramatic ceremonial boat burn at dusk to mark the Autumn Equinox. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out on this unique event right on your doorstep!
