HMS Mercury Blue Plaque Scheme

There will be a ceremony at The Sustainability Centre as part of the HMS Mercury Blue Plaque Scheme. At 12.00 midday Commodore Tony Morrow, who was Captain of Mercury from 1988-1991 and guest of honour, will unveil the plaque on the former medical block.

The grounds and buildings are open all day and all are welcome.Celebrations will include a specially brewed beer and a light finger buffet lunch.

Over half a million personnel served or trained at Mercury during the 52 years of its existence and amongst its distinguished visitors were the Queen, Prince Philip, Lord Mountbatten, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
The aim of the scheme is to commemorate its existence and the impact it had on the local community by placing blue plaques on selected buildings which had a special association with Mercury and which are fondly remembered by those who served at Leydene.
