Getting your car service arranged is something that you only think about when reminded, either by your garage or the onboard computer. If you have recently changed your car for a newer model you may be unsure about the maintenance schedule - when and where it needs servicing.

Modern Car Servicing

Car maintenance and servicing has changed quite drastically over the last few years. In the past it was quite straightforward as cars were serviced annually or at a specific mileage such as 10,000 miles.
Due to advances in technology and reliability, modern cars now need servicing at less frequent time and distance intervals. Your car service may only be due every two years and the mileage limit can be in excess of 20,000 miles. This is a ‘win win’ situation for the motorist as extending service intervals also keeps maintenance costs down.

Should you use Manufacturers Branded Car Servicing Parts?

Modern oils, filters and spark plugs are now longer lasting and constructed to higher tolerances; this allows the car to go for longer periods between scheduled maintenance intervals. Nearly all car manufacturers stipulate that you must use their branded parts when servicing your car, but this can be quite costly. True? The short answer is no!

Do I need to go back to the Main Dealer?

No is the short answer! A European ruling, Block Exemption, allows you to use a non-franchised garage without jeopardising your car manufacturer’s warranty. However a few simple conditions need to be met:

  • The independent garage that is servicing your car should be VAT registered.
  • The garage must use the manufacturers’ service schedules.
  • Parts used must either be from the manufacturer or of an equivalent standard - OEM is the term used by parts suppliers.
  • The invoice for the service must contain part numbers of the parts used and which oils and fluids were used.
  • There must also be a copy of the service schedule correctly filled in.

This gives you the choice of where to get your car serviced without affecting your car warranty.
