Cuts, colours, shampoos and sets. That’s just a handful of the services that a salon provides each day to their clients. Learning to develop all the techniques and services that a stylist uses is not easy, yet being an apprentice gives you a huge advantage in the hairdressing industry.
Apprenticeships allow you to be hands on from day one; this gives you more of chance to develop your communication skills, and appreciate the design talents and technical abilities that are necessary to be a good hair stylist.
My role in The Salon is to support the styling team. I do this by helping them organise for the day ahead; getting the client’s record cards out, meeting and greeting clients, helping on reception, and of course, pampering and advising clients whilst shampooing. My most favourite part of my day is when I support a stylist with a service; for example, helping apply a colour, blow drying, or straightening their client’s hair.
Coming straight out of school and going in to a hairdressing apprenticeship isn’t easy - you find the days are long and rather than sitting at a desk, you’re on your feet most of the day! However, earning while you learn makes you feel more adult and part of the grown-up world.
There’s no better feeling than having your own money in your pocket!
