Clanfield Cricket Club End of Summer Season Report

Clanfield Cricket Club enjoyed a reasonably successful 2016 season on the cricket field . They played 24 matches winning 16, including remaining unbeaten at the home ground of South Lane Meadow.

Some 27 players represented the club at least once, with 13 playing 10 or more times. Due to illness, skipper Matt Bradley missed his first games for 3 years.

Highlights included a new record score of 282 for the team on a terrific afternoon at Swanmore that yielded over 500 runs.

Leading batsman was Haider Khan who scored over 500 runs including his first ever hundred for the club. Chris Wheeler and Matt Bradley also scored over 400 runs. There were 7 other fifties scored as well as a number of career best scores.

On the bowling front, there were 5 players who took 20 wickets or more. Russ Stuart led the way with 28 followed by Bob Wheeler with 25 and Ben Cox with 24. The latter came from only 54 overs (less than half those bowled by the two leaders) and at a cost of 146 runs for an excellent average of only 6.08. There were no 5 wicket hauls over the season, but a few occasions where 4 were taken. This possibly reflects the difficulty of taking a lot of wickets in a game due to the usual restrictions on overs per bowler.

Leading fielder with 12 catches was Haider Khan. Mark Turnbull took the same number of dismissals but with several coming as wicket keeper.

The indoor league season starts for Clanfield on Sunday 16th October with matches following every 2 or 3 weeks. Indoor nets will start in the new year in preparation for the 2017 season.

Clanfield Cricket Club welcomes new players who wish to join the club; whether you are a seasoned campaigner or new to the game you will find a warm welcome.  Get in touch today.
