What's on at Butser Ancient Farm

Halloween celebrations of a more ancient kind are offered at an experimental archaeology site later this month.

Butser Ancient Farm, in Chalton Lane near Petersfield, is holding a number of spooky adventures for all ages in celebration of the Celtic festival of Samhain, which pre-dates the Christian All Hallows' Eve or Halloween as it became.

On Friday, October 21 you can spend a magical evening in the roundhouse, with fireside tales by master storyteller Jonathan Huet, and live music with The Courtiers. The Samhain evening includes a bar with Chalice Mead, local ales, and hot refreshments. Tickets cost £15.

Then on Wednesday, October 26, 2-3pm, there's the chance to see fairies and goblins at a storytelling afternoon for families, when Faye's Fables perform another Fairy Bigtoe show - Doom and Gloom Steal the Magic Toe. There's also a daily spirit hunt around the Farm, Monday to Friday 10-4pm. Tickets are £8, £7 and £4 (free for under-fives).

For hardcore horror fans, there's another Fright Night lined up on October 29, when groups of willing participants will be led around the dark, dark Farm buildings to face their fears in a series of haunting interactive encounters. Can you find the exit before your time runs out?

This event is recommended for over 16s. Tickets cost £10 and there will be a bar for victims to fortify themselves before their experience.
